Greetings Fellow Googlers and Happy New Year! It
is the time of resolutions and new beginnings and, like me,
you may have set some exciting online goals for the year to
come. If so, the timing for this issue’s tip is juicy
and ripe.
Today I am going to show you the fastest, easiest way
to test out all your new online ideas, using Google
AdWords.
This ingenious technique allows you to test a product’s
demand in the marketplace. Using Google AdWords you
can determine the level of interest in a potential site
or service; it even allows you to test the effectiveness
of a product name and its perceived value.
This method will provide you with many answers yet is
beautiful in its simplicity. The process goes
something like this:
Let’s say my wife Heidi would like to develop a Yoga
website. She has grand ideas which include a weekly
newsletter, multi level training, printable eBooks
and on and on. If she were to develop this online
yoga program based upon her own fancies and
brainstorming she would be looking at an incredible
work load and a lofty monetary investment.
Of course, Heidi does no want to expend all of this
energy and time only to realize that as far as the
online world is concerned Yoga is for the birds and
Pilates is the wave of the future.
Likewise, being the stickler that I am, I would like
to see some encouraging data before I fund Heidi’s
online yoga endeavors.
With this marketing research technique not only can
we find out if people are interested in an online
yoga course we can also discover exactly which areas
of such a program are desirable and which are
unnecessary. Here’s how:
We create some Google AdWords which describe the site.
Something like:
Online Yoga
Strengthen your body and mind
in the comfort of your own home.
http://www.HeidisYogaCourse.com
and
Yoga Meditations
Comprehensive online Yoga Course
Personalized Health Plan
http://www.HeidisYogaCourse.com
These ads will take their clickers to a webpage
discussing yoga and its many benefits.
On the page the reader is invited to fill out a
questionnaire. In return for filling out the form they
receive a free yoga guide eBook (or any freebie, i.e.
Healthy Yoga Recipes, etc.).
The questionnaire is designed to gather specific info
about developing the ideal online yoga program.
For example:
1. What type of yoga are you most interested in?
2. How many times a week would you like to receive a
newsletter?
3. Are you interested in Yoga meditations?
4. Are you currently involved with a yoga program
The potential customer is happy to fill out the
questionnaire because he or she feels that they are
creating a tailor made program. And they are! Plus
they receive a free useful eBook for their time.
Now we have it right from the goose’s mouth. We can
develop the ideas that people are interested in and
discard those which were not as exciting. Now we know
what our customers are looking for!
Hiding within this remarkable technique is also
invaluable product development research. For example the
data might tell us that 90% of people searching for
yoga are looking for yoga as it relates to fitness,
while only 10% are looking for yoga meditations.
In short, this simple, low cost, marketing research
test has revealed many things:
1. By the number of people who have clicked through
the ads, we can see both if our idea is viable and in
demand and if our keywords are effective.
2. The questionnaire verified the level of interest in
our product and gives us specific feedback as to what
people would expect from a product like ours.
3. From our response rate we can predict whether or
not the costs and efforts to develop this product
would “payoff”.
4. We now know quite a lot more about our potential
customers and how to reach them.
In this example we have talked about a Yoga website.
But, remember, you can apply this technique to any
product you like. Some more examples might include:
an ebook idea, physical goods, services and more.
So put your ideas to the test with Google AdWords.
